Affected CI vs Impacted CI In ServiceNow

It is one of the fundamental questions essential to establishing effective ITSM practices such as incident management, problem management & change management. You must have a clear-cut idea about the CI, whether it is an Affected CI or an Impacted CI.

Let’s summarize the difference between these two types of CI, and then I will provide a few examples that clarify the difference between both.

Affected CIImpacted CI
The Configuration Item (CI) that is directly impacted or affected by an incident, problem or change.The Configuration Item (CI) that may be impacted or affected indirectly by an incident, problem or change.
For example, during a network outage, the specific network router causing the issue can be considered an affected CI.The Configuration Item (CI) may be impacted or affected indirectly by an incident, problem or change.
Generally, it includes CI(s) who are directly involved in the issue or change & need immediate attention or resolution.It can include CI(s) who are not directly involved but may experience some impact or dependency because of an issue or change.
It is an indirect relationship between the CI & the record of incidents, problems, or changes.Used to understand the potential impact on other CIs and plan for necessary actions or communications.
